  7. ** UoSAT SPACECRAFT OPERATIONS **

  9. UoSAT-2 was returned to normal operations on Wednesday 161287
  10. following problems experienced with the new FORTH DIARY On
  11. Board Computer software loaded for the first time last month.
  12. The FORTH DIARY has been developed to support more complex
  13. attitude control algorithms on the spacecraft and to simplify
  14. routine operations. The new software ran correctly when first
  15. loaded into the UO-11 OBC but, when the spacecraft appeared on
  16. the next orbit in range of UoS, the OBC had 'crashed' leaving
  17. 'null' (80H) characters being transmitted on the 145 MHz
  18. downlink. Efforts at UoS were immediately directed towards
  19. simulation and diagnosis of the problem using the identical
  20. UO-11 spacecraft simulator on the ground (the new software had
  21. been running on this simulator - the spacecraft engineering
  22. model - for several weeks prior to loading into the OBC). It
  23. proved impossible to recreate the problem on the ground and
  24. thus it has been suggested that possibly the 32k byte memory
  25. bank on UO-11 has a bad location(s) - this theory will be
  26. tested by running diagnostics on the UO-11 OBC shortly.

  28. Resumption of normal service took considerable time and effort
  29. since control had to be effected through the less-amenable UHF
  30. command uplink and very careful procedures had to be worked
  31. out to minimise the risk to the spacecraft whilst at the same
  32. time providing the maximum of diagnostic information on the
  33. OBC software state.
